Meet TH Wines

Tyler Harlton is the winemaker and owner of TH Wines in Summerland. TH Wines makes handmade and authentic wine that tastes delicious. Since 2007, TH has shown what the human touch of the winemaker’s hand is capable of creating.  By foregoing large production and machinery, Tyler Harlton honours the elegant unfolding of each vintage. From winter pruning to bottling time, the craft of winemaking here is truly done by hand and with honest hard work. This is happy work, however, because TH Wines is joyfully immersed in a timeless food tradition.

At TH Wines, wine IS food. This is a long lost idea that if made honestly, wine is good for us and meant to have a space on the dinner table. In the past decade, there has been a food revolution that has improved the quality of what we eat and also the pleasure we take it.  Wine is meant to be made with authenticity as fuel for the body and soul. Holding these ideals is a matter of passion for food and wine culture that is part of who Tyler is.

Tyler grew up on a grain farm in Saskatchewan which plays a part in his strong work ethic and humble nature. He sampled a few careers before winemaking.  While studying in France he learned a new perspective on the tradition of making wine with care and attention; as a prized agricultural food product. His winery practices are straightforward and time-tested. Tyler uses simple equipment and very little new oak.  In the winery, there are no additions made to the wine and wild yeast is used in most cases. TH Wines has become a cult favourite amongst those who frequent the Okanagan Valley or are lucky enough to find a rare bottle out and about. He is continually gaining recognition as a dynamic winemaker and as an important part of our progressive local food culture.

Along with creating wine with a “by hand” approach since 2007, Tyler has been dialing back further extraction and manipulation on all of his wines. In particular, the last two vintages of Pinot Noir and Cabernet Franc have shown a unique finesse. By using a“less is more” style he is showing the essence of the grape while producing outstanding and compelling wines. Tyler is refining himself as an artistic and explorative winemaker. He makes stunning wine every vintage and is now amongst the upper echelon of winemakers in the Okanagan Valley and beyond.

Tyler has relationships with quality grape farmers up and down the Okanagan Valley; however, the wines in this pack were farmed in the Oliver area. With a hands-on relationship with the growers, he works every vineyard himself to closely watch vine and fruit progression. He is there from winter pruning straight through to bottling day. Tyler is passionate about keeping the spotlight on the terroir at hand, to celebrate the land, labour and the hands involved. As Tyler Harlton says, grapes are simply picked and squished.

TH showcases the unmuddled beauty of the Okanagan with light-handed brush strokes while producing just under 2000 cases per year. These wines are so sought after that they are tricky to find anywhere but here. This pack actually has 2 wines that are public pre-releases and the VIP swap out wine is only available through the By Hand Wine Club. We are moving into cooler weather so this pack has 2 whites and four reds.

About the Wines

TH showcases the unmuddled beauty of the Okanagan with light-handed brush strokes while producing just under 2000 cases per year. These wines are so sought after that they are tricky to find anywhere but here. This pack actually has 2 wines that are public pre-releases and the VIP swap out wine is only available through the By Hand Wine Club. We are moving into cooler weather so this pack has 2 whites and four reds.

First up is the 2016 Riesling. This is a bone-dry Riesling with a ripe palate and stony minerality. 2017 Viognier is fruit-driven, has a textured palate and crisp finish. Next is a comparison of vintages. You’ll receive Pinot Noir 2016 and 2017 along with Cabernet Franc 2016 and 2017. The 2017 vintages are unreleased and it’s suggested that you cellar the 2017 vintages until December if patience allows. This vintage comparison will introduce you to rare and pure expressions of these varietals. This elegant style of red wine is refreshing and what Tyler likes to drink at home. 24 VIP members will switch out the 2017 Cabernet Franc for 2017 Cabernet Franc Malbec. This wine was made from 2 barrels and is only available through TH’s own wine club. We are so excited to share these wines with you all. Cheers!

The TH Wine Pack

These 6 wines in front of you were hand picked by OkanaganWine.Club as they are a great representation of the quality and overall portfolio at TH Wines.

Selected Wines for TH Wines

2016 Riesling| TH Wines | $28.00

Tasting Notes | Intense apricot, citrus peel and pineapple underlined with minerality.  Bone dry with a beautifully textured palate, vibrant acidity, and a long finish.

Pairing | Fresh shucked West Coast oysters.

Drinking Recommendations | Chill and enjoy or cellar for 6-9 years.

Why We Chose It | Tyler says that a beautiful white wine is very difficult to make but certainly worth the effort. Appreciating the complexity and subtleties of fine white wine is a lot of fun when you play with different food pairings to enhance the experience.

Cases Produced | 289

Alc. 13% | TA 6 | RS 2 |

2017 Viognier | TH Wines | $28.00

Tasting Notes | A musky nose of ripe peach, nectarine pit and white rose petal, This dry Viognier has a lively lemon juice acidity with a textured mouthfeel and light bitterness on the finish.

Pairing | Baked Camembert with Okanagan nectarines and fresh, crusty bread.

Drinking Recommendations | Chill and enjoy or cellar for 3-6 years.

Why We Chose It | Viognier is classically rare, difficult to grow, ripen and work with. It is prone to disease and has low and unpredictable yields. It should be picked only when fully ripe, otherwise, the grape fails to develop the all of its aromas and tastes. This Viognier is sunny, fruit forward and layered.

Cases Produced | 241

Alc. 12.6% | TA 6.3 | RS 4.5 |

2016 Pinot Noir | TH Wines | $35.00

Tasting Notes | Muddled field berries with sweet cinnamon, crushed red rose, and sunbaked earth. This poised Pinot has a vein of minerality, soft tannins and supple texture that complement a layered palate.

Pairing | Wild mushrooms and sage with fresh pasta.

Drinking Recommendations | Decant for 30 mins and enjoy or cellar for 5-8 years. Serve at 15°C.

Why We Chose It | Pinot Noir, in particular, demands a hands-on connection between winemaker and fruit. This process is anchored in a genuine sense of work, of craft and certainly art. This vintage of Pinot Noir from TH is unique because it is the evolution of a delicate and expressive style that is rare in the Okanagan and reminiscent of Chinon in the Loire Valley, France. A dialed-back approach to winemaking allows the taster to enjoy the true essence of the grape in an unmuddled and pure way.

Cases Produced | 493

Alc. 13% | TA 5.1 | RS 1.5 |

2017 Pinot Noir | TH Wines | $35.00

Tasting Notes | An elegantly concentrated nose of cherry, savoury dried herbs, star anise and hints of earthiness. This is a vibrant and powerful Pinot Noir with a textured and savoury palate, fine tannins, and a satisfying finish.

Pairing | Cold meat pie.

Drinking Recommendations | Decant for 30 mins and enjoy this Christmas or cellar for 5-8 years. Serve at 15°C.

Why We Chose It | This wine is an exclusive pre-release to OWC members so tuck this away until the snow flies.  Pinot Noir is known as the “heartbreak grape” because of its difficulty to grow. It’s a great example of the saying “You can’t make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear” because the attention and care that the grape gets in the vineyard can be tasted in the glass. Characters of colour, aroma, fruit flavour and structure all play a part in the complex story of Pinot Noir and the season that has shaped it. By adopting a light-handed winemaking approach, the aim is to allow the wine to express itself honestly.

Cases Produced | 341

Alc. 12.2% | TA 5.1 | RS 1 |

2016 Cabernet Franc | TH Wines | $35.00

Tasting Notes | Aromatic sour cherries, jalapeno, fresh tobacco and wet river stone on the nose lead into a juicy wine with fine but structured tannins and a very long finish.

Pairing | Pork rillettes with cherry compote.

Drinking Recommendations | Decant for 30 mins and enjoy or cellar for 5-8 years. Serve at 15°C.

Why We Chose It | This wine has a pure, finessed style and a fragrant profile. Likened to wines made in the Loire Valley, this is made without much manipulation to really show the spark of the Cabernet Franc grape.

Cases Produced | 411

Alc. 13.3% | TA 5.1 | RS 1.5 |

2017 Cabernet Franc| TH Wines | $35.00

Tasting Notes | Savoury sunbaked tomato, ripe raspberry, brined green peppercorn and smoked herbs. A lively acidity and a luxe texture frame a bold and pretty wine that tells a story with every sip.

Pairing | Enchiladas.

Drinking Recommendations | Decant for 30 mins and enjoy this Christmas or cellar for 5-8 yearsServe at 15°C.

Why We Chose It | Also a pre-release, Tyler recommends cellaring this wine until at least December but it has a much longer ageing potential. Made in an elegant, lower alcohol style, this wine has a unique buoyancy that comes from picking the grapes slightly early. This lively and fresh take on red winemaking is nothing new but it is seeing a global revival amongst experimental winemakers who have a particular focus on crafting food-focused wines.

Cases Produced | 360

Alc. 12.4% | TA 6.4 | RS 1.5 |

The Okanagan Wine Club: Bringing You Quality Local Wines You’ll Love

Here at the Okanagan Wine Club, we’re passionate about bringing you great local wines from world-renowned and boutique wineries. As wine lovers ourselves, we know how challenging it is to walk into a liquor store and find a new bottle of wine to try (many of our selections CAN’T be found in liquor stores). Will it pair nicely with the meal you’ve planned? Is it a good vintage? We’ve had these questions ourselves, and that’s why we work hard to take the guesswork out of trying new wines. We work directly with some of the Okanagan’s best wineries to hand-select the top seasonal offerings and bring them straight to your door.

What does that mean? It means you can spend less time analyzing your wines and more time enjoying them. It means you’ll never again have to guess whether or not 2011 was a good year for local whites or whether you’re overpaying for that bottle of Merlot. Put away your vintage charts; when you shop through the Okanagan Wine Club, you’ll benefit from our wine experts’ knowledge and experience in choosing great local wines.

No Monthly Fee Means You Only Pay for What You Want

One common question we often get is what monthly dues we charge to be part of the club. The answer? None. We don’t charge our members any kind of monthly fee whatsoever. Joining the club is absolutely free, and always will be.

The Okanagan Wine Club is not a monthly membership site, and this is important for several reasons:

  •  No monthly membership fee means you can try wines at your leisure.
  • You can pick and choose the sample packs you want to receive without having to cancel a featured pack (I always forgot to cancel and got stuff I didn’t want).
  • No inventory on hand means we don’t guarantee sales to the wineries, which means they give us their highest quality wine.

Our partner wineries know that our current and future club members are passionate about great wine, and that our members represent a significant part of the wine enthusiast community – that means the wineries are proud to present their very best wines to Okanagan Wine Club members

The VIP Lounge: How to Get In

We value all of our members and offer club members a variety of great services, but as a VIP member, you’ll receive several added perks you won’t find anywhere else. Our VIP members benefit from all sorts of bonus offers that the general public won’t ever hear about. VIP members also have priority access to exclusive wine packs, so you can order your wines a full day before the general public and benefit from exclusive deals from our partner organizations.

FAQ

Do I Need to Sign a Contract?

Not at all! Joining the Okanagan Wine Club is entirely free and doesn’t require any paperwork. You have no contract with us and may choose to unsubscribe at any time. We do not trap you into monthly charges…you simply buy the sample packs you want 🙂 Simple.

What Happen If I Want to Leave the Okanagan Wine Club?

You don’t really have to leave, as you are not in a subscription! You just don’t buy anymore (but we doubt that will happen).

Is This a Connoisseurs-Only Club? Do I Have to Know Anything About Wine to Join the Club?

It can seem intimidating at first to join a wine club when you know nothing about wine, but rest assured you have nothing to fear. The Okanagan Wine Club is proud to offer a variety of educational materials that will help you to become a wine master in no time. Our weekly newsletters and blog articles are full of great information that can help you to better understand the wine world. With these materials, you’ll learn about wine regions, flavour and texture profiles, and all the big industry news. Best of all, it’s written in a beginner-friendly manner that assumes absolutely zero knowledge of wine, wine pairings, or the wine industry. Even if you’re starting fresh with no wine background whatsoever, you’ll love what we have to offer – and you’ll quickly learn everything you need to know.

Best of all, joining the Okanagan Wine Club is completely free and requires no monthly commitment. So even if you’re not a “wine club” person, you can still learn about, enjoy, and discuss the best wines in the Okanagan.

I Only Like One Kind of Wine!

One of the great advantages of joining our wine club is that you’ll be able to try new, boutique wines easier than ever. Perhaps the reason you don’t like white wines, for instance, is because you haven’t yet found the right white. Wines come in many diverse forms and flavour profiles, and by ordering today you get to try 6 new wines.

I Don’t Drink Enough Wine to Justify Joining a Wine Club!

Even if you don’t necessarily drink wine on a regular basis, you probably still celebrate with it, or entertain family and friends. It’s never a bad idea to have a few bottles of wine on hand should some old friends unexpectedly drop in – and by being prepared, you’ll look like a fantastic host. Wine also makes an excellent gift for birthdays and holidays. Invited for a dinner party? Quickly grab a nice bottle with a story to tell. No one will ship you wine automatically. If you order once, that’s it (until you choose to order more).

I’m Afraid to Give Out My Credit Card Number Online!

We understand that e-commerce can be intimidating, and credit card fraud is a real concern. We ensure that the winery in turn has a payment platform that uses secure SSL verification, a security method that prevents third parties from getting your information. SSL verification ensures that your computer only connects to trusted sites that independent third parties have confirmed as reliable. It’s the technological equivalent of keeping your credit card in a box with two different locks protecting it.

What If I Don’t Like Your Wine?

Here at the Okanagan Wine Club, we strive to bring you the best wine deals in the region – and in support of that mission, we’ve chosen to focus exclusively on cultivating and distributing a great selection of products.  By partnering with several different wineries, we’re able to offer you a wider selection of wines to try and enjoy.

Sadly, this means we have no control over the wine making process, and therefore we cannot guarantee the quality of each individual bottle. However, many of our partner wineries do allow you to return wine directly to the winery if the quality has been compromised. If you are unsatisfied with your wine purchase or the quality of your wine, please email us to help you solve the issue.

There’s A Specific Kind of Wine I Want, But You Don’t Offer It!

The great freedom we offer over traditional wine membership sites is that you, the user, are free to order the wine packs you want and decline the wine packs you don’t want. So thankfully, you’re not obligated to buy a wine you don’t think you’ll enjoy (we encourage trying new wines).

Here at the Okanagan Wine Club, we try to come out with new offers every two weeks. If you don’t see your preferred wine in our offers, send us an email and we’ll do our best to accommodate you.

Where am I Purchasing The Wine?

You are purchasing wine directly from the winery. All on their site but we are working closely with the wineries to ensure that OWC members get treated as true VIPs and enjoy a quality experience every time.
