Meet Rust Wine Co.

Rust Wine Company is a fresh take on some of the oldest vines in the Okanagan. Highlighting the subtleties of individual established vineyards is the passion of three dynamic gentlemen, who all happen to be sommeliers.  Rust is special because of their estate vineyards in different areas of the Okanagan Valley. They shine a light on the differences that these individual vineyards show and they are truly making modern style wines with old, beautiful vines. The name tells the tale of old and new with a nod to the heritage of the previous winery at the same site and the passing of hands on to the new creativity that has been brewing alongside the history of these old vines. The labels feature close up photos of actual rust. Rust has been associated with the brand because it draws a parallel with wine in the way that it is vibrant and ever-changing as it ages.
Rust is set apart because of their estate vineyards located on the Golden Mile Bench, West Osoyoos, Okanagan Falls, and South Cawston; totalling 200 acres.  This allows Rust to express all of these different terroirs by treating all of the wines the same in the winery and amplifying the differences in sense of place that each vineyard shows. These vineyards are some of the oldest in the entire Valley; some were planted as far back as the 1960’s. While it is a matter of opinion if older vines make for better wine, they certainly produce more balanced grapes that are smaller and more concentrated than young vines. This can lead to more structured wines.
Zinfandel is a rarity in the Okanagan Valley.  In the entire province of BC, there are only about 15 acres planted, and Rust has about a quarter of that planted at the home vineyard on the Golden Mile Bench. Zinfandel is one of the hardest grape varietals to grow, especially in this climate. This is not the Zinfandel of old, this is BC Zinfandel with a savoury palate that is much more appealing to drink on its own and happens to be lower in alcohol.
The team at Rust has the luxury of growing grapes in different areas of the Okanagan.  Grape vines are highly sensitive to their local environment. They adapt in a variety of ways to different soil types, hours of sunlight, and variation in temperature, wind and humidity. The end result is very different styles of wine. Single vineyard wines are distinctive and show attention to detail which equals better quality and value for you. So the term ‘single vineyard’ is essentially a quality mark. The vineyard-specific wine shows a form of special selection on the part of the winemaker. Rust wants you to taste the best of what their vineyards can yield.
It’s important to note that the three people involved in Rust are all sommeliers; which is a wine professional with extensive training and a particular focus on hospitality and wine and food pairing. Jesse Harnden and Kane Morgan are friendly faces that guests look forward to seeing, who are incredibly innovative and sharp. Jeff Hundertmark is the winemaker with a resume full of accolades from the Niagara region in Ontario. Coming from a sommelier background, the focus is primarily on the experience of the wine from the customer’s point of view. In terms of how they’re able to enjoy it and how that increases their quality of life, whether that be with friends at a backyard bbq or dinner in a fine dining restaurant. At Rust, it’s a matter of how life is made better with wine.

About the Wines

The Rust Wine Pack is a first glimpse at the premium tier of single vineyard wines. Rust is thrilled to be releasing these wines first to OWC members. Take advantage of this exclusive opportunity and taste the sense of place that is so transparent in all of these wines. Winemaker Jeff Hundertmark is very proud of these wines and simply can’t wait to hear what you think. Particularly, don’t miss the chance to taste the beautiful and rare old vine Zinfandel. This is a wine that isn’t made every year and the guys at Rust deemed 2014 as an outstanding vintage for Zinfandel at the home vineyard on the Golden Mile Bench. This is the first wine pack of 2018 that is all red. Bring on autumn!
First up is a comparison of three single vineyard Merlots. You will receive the 2016 Golden Mile Bench Merlot, the 2016 Similkameen Valley Merlot, and the 2016 Okanagan Valley Merlot. These are all worthy of the cellar and tons of fun to taste side by side.
Next, you will compare the 2016 Similkameen Valley Syrah with the 2016 Okanagan Valley Syrah. These wines are very different and allow the opportunity to take note of the terroir. Lastly is the rare 2014 Zinfandel. This wine is only made in outstanding vintages.  These vines are some of the oldest in British Columbia and are at home at South Rock Vineyard on the Golden Mile Bench. This Zinfandel is aromatic, savoury and reminiscent of premium Old World Primitivo.
24 VIP members will switch out the 2014 Zinfandel with 2014 Petra. This wine is 100% Merlot from South Rock Vineyard and a limited 150 cases were made. It is an elegant and outstanding example of Merlot that has had time to begin evolving in the bottle. Cheers!
