Meet Marionette Winery

Marionette Winery is a cheerful and vibrant family-owned winery in Salmon Arm, BC.  Located two hours north of Kelowna on the shores of Shuswap Lake, Salmon Arm has a few new wineries popping up but the area is better known for it’s forest industry. Marionette marked their first vintage in 2014. Winemakers, viticulturalists and owners Jamie Smith and Amanda Eastwood are making wine that is expressive of the lush northern region where they live while working in harmony with the ecosystem of their land. Both Jamie and Amanda educated themselves in viticulture and winemaking in the UK and Europe so they make fine wine in a delicate and traditional style to pay homage to their beginnings and early mentors. Marionette Winery crafts lively wines that are wildly expressive of the cooler climate of Salmon Arm. We have been looking forward to showing you all this special winery since we met them last summer. Marionette Winery is the first winery that lies outside of the Okanagan Valley that OWC has featured and we couldn’t be more excited.
Jamie Smith is from Salmon Arm, BC and Amanda Eastwood is from the UK. They met while working in Spain and went to school for viticulture and enology in the UK at the University of Brighton.  After gaining invaluable experience in Europe and England, the young and ambitious couple also worked at a winery on the gulf islands off the coast of Vancouver before settling in Salmon Arm with two young children and Jamie’s parents nearby.
Marionette chose the name for their winery as a connection to the history of the land and artists of all sorts. Many years ago a family of artists and performers lived on the property where Marionette is built. They traveled in beautifully painted, horse drawn caravans to perform shows which featured handmade marionettes. Jamie and Amanda felt when they heard their story that it was something special.  It was unique to the place and its history. It felt like there was a magical thread, an invitation – a story that they could pick up and start to work on again. So, that’s what they intend to do. They intend to build something beautiful that could only be from here and from them.
The sloped vineyard at Marionette is planted Pinot Gris, Zweigelt and Pinot Noir. Recently, they have also planted Chardonnay, Gruner Veltliner and Siegherebe. The wines are fresh, balanced and fruit forward with a distinct note of minerality. The farming and winemaking is done by both Jamie and Amanda. They are working in the direction of sustainability and a self-sufficient farming approach so as little as possible is disturbed on the land to maintain a true sense of place. Beneficial plants are grown in between vineyard rows and a brood of chickens free range the property for pest control and fertilizer. The wines in the portfolio are made in the vineyard with gentle and skilled hands.
