Meet Daydreamer Wines

Daydreamer Wines is a small, family-owned winery in Naramata. Winemaker and co-owner Marcus Ansems makes fine wine in small batches with organic grapes. Since 2013, Daydreamer Wines have been well known for being unique, balanced and delicious. They grow Chardonnay and Pinot Noir at the home vineyard in Naramata and purchase grapes in the South Okanagan that are particularly suited to ripen well at specific vineyard plots. All of the grapes come from vineyards free of fertilizers, insecticides and pesticides.

The People + Story Behind The Wines:
Marcus and Rachel Ansems have both been in the wine industry for over 15 years. Rachel comes from a wine business background in Niagara, Ontario, where she and Marcus first met. Rachel holds WSET certification and has worked in the wine industry in a variety of roles both at home and internationally.
Marcus is Canada’s fifth Master of Wine, of which there are just over 300 in the world. A Master of Wine is someone who has gone under very rigorous testing in all areas of wine knowledge. Moreover, he is the only Master of Wine who is also a university-qualified winemaker and viticulturist in Canada. Becoming an MW was an aspiration for Marcus for many years and he attributes his success to the support of his family.

Marcus first got his hands dirty in wine as a teenager by helping out at his uncle’s winery in Victoria, Australia. Since completing an enology degree at Adelaide University, Marcus has travelled extensively making wine. While racking up over thirty vintages, Marcus has made wine in South Africa, France, Italy, Australia, and Canada. Marcus has also travelled as a wine consultant and buyer. Fortunately, Marcus and Rachel have settled in Naramata; our own backyard.

The Winemakers Philosophy:
All of the work is done by hand in the winery; Marcus’ philosophy is that it’s good physical work and makes for better wine. Marcus believes that good winemaking comes down to attention to detail; the idea is to be gentle and add as little as possible, allowing the grapes and the vintage to take center stage. Small batches are handled with care and watched carefully as they ferment naturally. In Marcus’ opinion, there are many benefits to going the natural route in the winery. At the end of the day, it’s a goal to express where the grapes come from and a wild ferment does a great job of this while adding and an extra layer of complexity on the palate. 
Daydreamer wines are made in a style that appeals to Marcus and Rachel, which tend to be dryer wines, with focused acidity and complex aromatics; either savoury or floral. Complexity is a real focal point and we hope that OWC members enjoy this.
About the Wines

Naramata is a vibrant wine-making community where the climate lends itself to versatility, great for moderate ripening varieties with consistent lively acid. Fundamentally, Daydreamer farms organically because they live at the home vineyard site where their children play. The Okanagan Valley is also one of the few wine regions in the world that are conducive to growing organically, based on low humidity and disease pressure.

First up in this pack are two bottles of 2016 Jasper. This is a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon that has been in newer French oak barrels for 18-20 months. Next, are two bottles of 2017 Amelia which is a co-fermentation of Naramata Viognier and Golden Mile Syrah that is fermented for around 11 months in older French oak. On the white side is the single vineyard 2017 Riesling from Naramata. This wine is bone dry, lively and aromatic. Members will also get the reserve 2017 Rachel’s Viognier. This is aged in neutral oak, fermented wild as with all of the wines, and single vineyard grapes.

Marcus Ansems Rachel’s Viognier 2016 | Daydreamer Wines | $30.00

Tasting Notes | White peach, jasmine, lemon curd, and wet stones on the nose. The crisp palate has depth and richness with refreshing acidity and length. Look for notes of citrus, dried stone fruit, brioche, and hazelnut.
Pairing | Seared scallop with fennel.
Drinking Recommendations | Enjoy now or cellar 4-6 years.
Why We Chose It | Marcus has worked in Condrieu in France, the birthplace of Viognier, and has a similar climate to Naramata. Viognier grapes have a tendency of high alcohol naturally, however, this wine shows a cool elegance and this goes back to skill and experience in the winery.

Daydreamer Riesling 2017 | Daydreamer Wines | $25.00

Tasting Notes | An elegant nose of green apple, lemon-lime and honey. The palate is dry with juicy acidity and refreshing flavours of melon, wet stone and a hint of petrol.
Pairing | A perfect aperitif.

Why We Chose It | This single vineyard Riesling is refreshing, lively and ageable.

Daydreamer Amelia 2017 | Daydreamer Wines | $35.00

Tasting Notes | An intensely aromatic nose of stewed black cherry, violet, smoked crisp bacon, and fresh black pepper. This stunning wine has a full, silky mouthfeel with bright acidity and a long finish with flavours of blackberry, poached apricot, and spice.
Pairing | Pulled pork on brioche.
Drinking Recommendations | Decant for 30 mins and enjoy or cellar for 4-6 years.
Why We Chose It | This Syrah is co-fermented with a 10% Viognier for lifted aromatics and a soft mouthfeel. It is reminiscent of a Rhone Syrah, where Marcus has also worked. Amelia is a co-fermentation of Naramata Viognier and Golden Mile Syrah. It’s aged for about 11 months in mostly older French oak.

Daydreamer Jasper 2016 | Daydreamer Wines | $30.00

Tasting Notes |Dusty blackcurrant, mint and dark spices on the nose. This blend is full-bodied with firm, chocolatey tannins and tastes like pomegranate, eucalyptus, juicy blueberry and cinnamon with a long finish.
Pairing | Beef short ribs.
Drinking Recommendations | Decant for 30 minutes and enjoy or cellar for 5-7 years. This will develop beautifully in the bottle.
Why We Chose It | Jasper is a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon that is fermented predominantly in newer French oak and in barrel for around about 18-20 months. This is a full-bodied and satisfying blend that is perfect for cooler weather.
