Meet Black Market Wine Company
Black Market Wine Company is all about breaking the rules. Calgarians Rob Hammersley and Michelle Shewchuk take high-quality grapes from vineyards around the Okanagan and craft a small amount of fine wines out of BC Wine Studio in Okanagan Falls, BC. BC Wine Studio is a custom wine crush facility and cooperative, a licensed winery space that up-and-coming winemakers can use without investing in their own equipment right off the bat.
Rob and Michelle have three kids. They live in Calgary and hold full time jobs there, so they make many short but sweet trips out to the Okanagan throughout the year. Michelle is a flight attendant with an international airline, and Rob is a senior corporate finance and strategy professional in the power and utilities industry. They love to travel to international wine regions and have been wine enthusiasts since their university days. For years they have been enjoying adventures in the Okanagan, and in all of that time, they have loved to seek out small wineries that didn’t distribute outside of BC because of their tiny size. Rob often tells the story of filling their vehicle to the brim with hard-to-find BC wine and “pinning it” across the provincial border. To Rob and Michelle, the only way to get these very special wines was through “the black market” or by hunting them down inconspicuously. This is how the name came about. Black Market wines are made with meticulous care, and they are distinct and reflective of place.
In 2012 Black Market celebrated its first vintage with only one hundred cases. They have since grown to produce just under 1000 cases last year. Michelle and Rob have studied wine through both travel and the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) program. Rob has also studied viticulture and enology at Washington State University. Producing wine at the BC Wine Studio also has a ton of advantages. Through a mentorship with the facility’s owner Mark Simpson, they have gained hands-on experience in the vineyard and the winery. Also, because there are other winemakers that work out of BC Wine Studio, it is a cooperative environment and learning space for everyone involved. Rob and Michelle have found this experience invaluable and see it as a low-risk initial step toward owning their own winery. These days they are excitedly looking for their own winery property.
Black Market has forged relationships with grape growers from areas such as Naramata and Oliver. Many of the trips fromCalgary include walking up and down vineyard rows and talking shop with local farmers. Having the versatility of choosing the best grapes they can find as opposed to owning their own vineyard appeals to them.
Rob and Michelle truly believe that wine is made in the vineyard. Their intention is not to create the same wine every year but rather to embrace natural vintage variation. By allowing the vintage to shine through, the end result is representative of the grape varietal and the story of the vintage. The grapes for these wines are grown by quality-driven farmers in an environmentally sustainable way and hand harvested into small bins. All of the work in the winery is done by hand and meticulously cared for by Rob. He uses a mix of French and American Oak of various ages and guides the wines to develop naturally.
About the wines
Black Market has seven wines in their portfolio, and this pack contains six of them. These wines are crafted to reflect the varietals’ natural character along with a sense of place. Rob and Michelle make wine that they like to drink, and they hope you will, too. A few of the wines in this pack are exclusive to Okanagan Wine Club.
To begin with, a mystery: 2016 Secret Society is a white blend that doesn’t list what the grapes are anywhere on the bottle. Can you guess? This wine is crisp, aromatic, and versatile. 2016 Collusion is a classic blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon that spends a bit of time in neutral oak. The oak gives this fruity and refreshing wine great texture and depth. Next, the 2016 Semillon. This is one of Rob’s favorites because it was intended to be part of the blend for Collusion, but it developed so beautifully that he bottled fifty cases as a straight Semillon. This Semillon became the first wine in Black Market’s “Unsanctioned Series.” This series is for extra special wines that were made in miniscule amounts. Omerta is a crisp and lively Rose made with 100% Pinot Noir. Omerta has great structure and depth of flavour.
Now to the reds: the second wine in the “Unsanctioned Series” is the 2015 Pinot Noir. These grapes were partially whole cluster fermented and aged in one new French oak barrel for sixteen months. It has been resting in bottle for nearly another year and is completely exclusive to OWC. Lastly, the 2016 Syrah: Rob has a particular love for Syrah and believes that it will continue to be a star in the Okanagan Valley. The profile of this wine is slightly reminiscent of Black Forest cake, so dig in and enjoy. All of these wines are made for your enjoyment with care and with respect for the grape. Cheers!
